Gauge conversion at Dawlish. Here the last down broad gauge "Cornishman" crossed with the last up "Cornishman" and the passengers joined hands across the six-foot and sang "Auld Lang Syne." Here also a GWR employee brought in to convert the gauge found he simply could not bring himself to do it, and instead committed suicide by throwing himself into the sea.
