Gooch Valve Gear
"Seventy Miles an Hour" -- the Up "Flying Dutchman." Frontispiece of G. A. Nokes (Sekon), History of the Great Western Railway (1895)
"Great Western," the first locomotive built entirely at Swindon Works, 1846. In original condition, before conversion to a 4-2-2
Gooch's valve gear was similar to Stephenson's except for having a stationary link. It was used as far away as the Reading Railroad. There is some doubt as to whether the true inventor of this valve gear was Daniel Gooch or his brother John Viret Gooch.
