Clarke, Donauwörth March
Jeremiah Clarke (1670-1707) wrote the Donauwerth March to commemorate a battle in the War of the Spanish Succession. The Battle of Donauwörth took place in Donauwörth, a small town in Bavaria, on 2 June 1704. In this battle, the forces under the command of Duke of Marlborough defeated the Bavarians, who had risen in rebellion against the Holy Roman Emperor and formed an alliance with France. A piece of ceremonial music written in all probability for an orchestral ensemble including brass instruments and percussion, it is found in a harpsichord reduction of 1711 and readily translates onto the organ.
