When Christ was born in Bethlehem
Grace Weiser was born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1860, a descendent of Johann Conrad Weiser (1696-1760), the Pennsylvania Dutch pioneer. She married the Hon. James Davis, a judge in Jersey City, New Jersey. The family also had a summer home in Bradley Beach, New Jersey. Grace Weisel Davis devoted herself to missionary work in the Methodist Church for many years. By 1915 she was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died at her summer home in Bradley Beach in October 1926, leaving her not inconsiderable estate of around $200,000 to the Methodist Church. Her will was contested by her nephew on the grounds that she was not of sound mind when she made it. For some unaccountable reason the tune is listed as "Pavlovic," a Serbian surname, but it is in fact an arrangement of the old Scottish folksong, "Ye banks and braes of bonnie doon."
