In the country nigh to Bethlehem
This Christmas carol first appeared in the third edition of Henry R. Bramley and John Stainer (eds.),Christmas Carols Old and New (1878). Nothing is known of Kate Bartlett, the author of the text. Gertrude Mary Hine (b. 1854), the composer of the tune, was the sister of William Egerton Hine (1851-1926), a well-known landscape painter and the art master at Harrow School. The Hines lived in Hampstead, where Gertrude Hine was resident composer to the Hampstead Choral Society, for which her brother was a leading soloist.
