With Mary's love but not her fear
The Rev. Alexander Pirie (1737-1804) taught philosophy at a seminary in Abernethy, but was suspended by the synod after recommending Lord Kames's Essays on the Principles of Morality and Natural Religion to his students. Perhaps because he was suspect for his liberal views, this hymn text has not achieved the popularity that it probably deserves. It is paired here with a tune by Isabella Mary Gibson née Scott (1786-1838), a distant relative of Sir Walter Scott, who married the Edinburgh painter Patrick Gibson, RSA. Besides being a composer of church music, Mrs. Gibson was a very fine harpist.
