O God of life, whose power benign
The author of the text, the Rev. Arthur Tozer Russell, M.A. (1806-1874) was Rector of Wellington, Shropshire. The composer of the tune, Miss Maria C. Tiddeman (1837-1915), was the daughter of the Rev. Richard Tiddeman, who was successively Perpetual Curate of North Hinksey near Oxford, and Rector of Fingest-cum-Ibstone in Buckinghamshire on the Oxfordshire border. Maria Tiddeman is believed to have studied music at Oxford University, though at the time she was not, of course, allowed to take a degree. She seems to have been a friend of Sir John Stainer, who was possibly her teacher.
