The kings they came from out the south
A text by St. Louis poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). Some versions include a rather poorly worded additional verse about the Virgin Mary, but this does not seem to have formed part of the original, which was published in Harper's Magazine in 1911. It is set here to Jeremiah Clarke's well-known tune, "St. Magnus." There have been a number of other musical settings including those by Fay Foster (1917), Dorcas Redding (1946), Ulysses Simpson Kay (1957), Kirke Mecham (1996) and Mary Ann Joyce-Walker (2013).
