Silent night! shadowy night!
An original text by the poet Marie J. Mason (1822-1881), which is however something of a commentary on Joseph Mohr's carol "Stille Nacht." The tune has generally been attributed to Franz Gruber, who certainly arranged it, but as Miss Mason recognized by referring to it -- apparently accurately -- as "Ancient Tyrolean Melody," the tune seems to have existed before Franz Gruber. Some early sources attribute it to Michael Haydn, but this does not seem to be correct. Others refer to it as "Ancient Austrian Melody" and "Ancient Tyrolean Melody."
