Behold, a dawning star appears
This carol text appears in a John Reist , A Collection of Hymns Designed for the Use of the Church, Lancaster, PA, 1795. This appears to be a Mennonite hymnal, and John Reist (1758-1816) was a Mennonite minister who held substantial lands in Lititz, Pa. This must be one of the earliest Mennonite hymn texts in English. It is not known whether Samuel Stanley's tune "Wilton" was known to early nineteenth-century Mennonites, but his anthem, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow," certainly was.
