Wilson Jubilate in G Untitled
Henry Wilson (1828-1877) was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, and began his career in Northampton, Massachusetts, probably as organist of St. John's Episcopal Church, at which time he published this Jubilate in 1848. He later became one of the first Americans to study at the Leipzig Conservatorium, where he was a student of Plaidy, Moschelles, Richter and Pepperitz. On his return he became organist of Christ Episcopal Church, Hartford, Connecticut, where he remained until a few weeks before his death. He was one of Dudley Buck's teachers and his compositions included both secular and sacred choral music. The Anglican chant reproduced here is unusual in having alternative endings; the second might be more suited to penitential seasons. The pointing of the Jubilate reproduced here is the same as Wilson's original, and strikes me as very progressive for 1848.
