William Byrd, Be Still, my Blessed Babe

This fifteenth-century carol about the Holy Innocents was arranged by William Byrd as a five-part anthem in his Psalms, Sonets & Songs (1588). The original, "Lullaby, my Sweet Little Baby," is much longer and falls into three distinct sections, of which this is the second. These comprise a lullaby with no particular religious content, the present movement concerning the Holy Innocents and addressed to the Christchild, and a dirge, again with no particular religious content.
