On opening our organ (Nov. 9th., 1822)
The Rev. Henry Ware, Jr., D.D. (1794-1843) was educated at Harvard and became Minister of Second (Arlington Street) Unitarian Church in Boston. He was later Parkman Professor of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Theology at Harvard. He wrote this hymn, which is found in Singers and Songs of the Liberal Faith, Boston, 1875, for the opening of the organ in the Arlington Street Church . The organ in question was contracted for with the organ builder William Marcellus Goodrich (1777-1833) of Boston in 1821 and cost $1,500. It had 14 stops (including a Pedal Sub Bass) and a total of 814 pipes, housed in a mahogany case with gilt front pipes.
