Vaughan Williams, Phos Hilaron
This is a setting of Poet Laureate Robert Bridges's translation of the "Phos Hilaron," and was published in 1920 as one of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Four Hymns under the title of "Evening Hymn." It is a very cleverly crafted piece making use of the original Byzantine chant of "Phos Hilaron," but also making use of modern harmonies to create a decidedly twentieth-century arrangement. The original version is for tenor, viola and piano, but I have arranged it for unison voices plus organ accompaniment, simplifying the accompaniment somewhat and transposing it down from E major to C major.
