See, from on high, a light divine
An anonymous from the Exeter Collection originating in early nineteenth-century America. The tune is by the Rev. Martin Madan, M.A., who was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, and was for many years Chaplain of the London Lock Hospital, the world's first clinic for treating venereal disease. The Rev. Mr. Madan attracted considerable criticism for writing Thelyphthora, or A Treatise on Female Ruin, in which he argued that polygamy would be a solution for many of his society's ills.
