While shepherds watched (Crowley)
"Crowley" was an old psalm tune that was being sung with the text, "While shepherds watched their flocks by night," in early nineteenth-century West Cornwall. It had largely fallen out of use their in favor of other tunes by the end of the nineteenth century. The tune is perhaps named after Robert Crowley (c. 1517-1588) who published The Psalter of Dauid newly translated into English metre in such sort that it maye the more decently, and with more delete of the mynde, be reade and songe of all men in 1549.
