Almighty Ruler of the world to thee
The Rev. S. Childs Clarke, M.A. (1821-1903) was sometime Vicar of St. Thomas-by-Launceston and Headmaster of Launceston Grammar School in Cornwall. The Rev. Mr. Clarke wrote this text for processions at festival services, and set it to Sir Joseph Barnby's tune "Sarum," written in 1869 for for Bishop William Walsham How's hymn, "For all the saints who from their labours rest." It was used among other places for choir festivals at Exeter Cathedral, Bristol Cathedral, and Cartmel Priory, and at the opening of the new three-manual organ at Paignton Parish Church donated by Paris Singer and built in 1890 by Charles Martin of Oxford with casework consisting of neo-Perpendicular Main and Rückpositiv cases designed by Alfred Mardon Mowbray.
