"The Plant of Renown: A Christmas Carol" appears in the 1825 volume of the Wesleyan Methodist Magazine, and appears to be the work of the Rev. Alexander Bell, a Scots circuit rider who was ordained in 1810 and died in 1851. The poem refers to Ezekiel 34:29: "And I will raise up for them a plant of renown." The Cornish version of the carol was published in Penzance in 1870 by F. Rodda in A Selection of Carols, Pieces and Anthems, suitable for Christmas. The Cornish version has only half of the stanzas, but I have reproduced the whole thing. It is set here to the tune of the Cornish carol "Star of Bethlehem."
