Mount Zion in 1847
The text of this carol is by Isaac Watts, but the tune "Whitby" is a little obscure; the composer is given in one source as "Sharpe", but who he might have been is uncertain unless, perhaps, he was the Scotsman Charles Kilpatrick Sharpe (1781-1851). It is also a little uncertain precisely what sort of carol this is. It might be for a saint's day, as Sir Charles Stanford suggested in his anthem on the same text. Many hymnals suggest its use for Ministry or Ordination. It might also be suitable for Advent.
