Otley-in-Wharfdale, near Leeds, in an engraving of ca.1830
This carol seems to have originated in North Yorkshire in the early nineteenth century, and is found in Carols and Hymns for Christmas (Otley, Yorkshire: William Walker & Sons, ca. 1830). Otley, incidentally, was a center of innovation in nineteenth-century printing technology. The carol is set here to a Bohemian tune by Johann G. Braun (1675), which is the only tune I can find whose meter fits the text.
