The text of this carol is found as the "Fifth Hymn for Christmas" in A Selection of Psalms for the Use of Public Worship. Stafford: Arthur Morgan, 1827. Arthur Morgan was a stationer, bookseller, printer and publisher, with an office in Market Square, Stafford, where he was also the Postmaster and the Agent for the Sun Fire Insurance Company. He was listed as a contributor to the restoration of St. Mary's Collegiate Church in Stafford. The tune was written by Henry B. Walmisley in 1853 and first published in Peter Maurice (ed.), Choral Harmony: A Collection of Tunes in Short Score for Four Voices. London: G. H. Davidson, 1854.
