Rule of 3 & 5
Most Anglican chants conform to "The Rule of Three and Five," which means they are of the form, "Reciting Note, 1, 2, 3; Reciting note, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The Rule of Three and Five, however, has only been standard since about the middle of the eighteenth century, and before that there was considerable diversity.
