A carol for Christmas eve said to have been written by Fr. Ranald Rankin, a Roman Catholic priest at Moidart in the Hebrides before his departure for Australia in 1854, where he went to arrange for many of his impoverished Moidart parishioners to emigrate and begin a new and more prosperous life in Australia. The tune is said originally to have been a Waulking Song, that is a song sung by women working in the tweed industry as they "waulked" or shrank the cloth to produce a finer tweed.
Women waulking tweed, from Thomas Pennant, "A Voyage to the Hebrides" (1772)
