While its locomotives were some of the finest in the country, the London, Chatham & Dover Railway's coaching stock was pitiful to say the least. E. L. Ahrons described LC&DR coaches as "poverty-stricken rabbit hutches." The company continued building 4- and 6-wheeled carriages to obsolete designs right down to 1899, and indeed the South Eastern & Chatham even continued building to some of the same LC&DR designs after the Joint Working Agreement came into force. While the GWR, MR and LNWR were building modern bogie coaches with gas or electric lighting, the LC&DR continued to build carriages with oil lighting and -- until 1890, when the Westinghouse automatic brake was introduced -- without brakes. The "poverty-stricken rabbit hutches" did, nevertheless, look very handsome in their varnished teak livery. Under the auspices of the Southern Railway several of the LC&DR 4-wheelers ended their days operating on the Isle of Wight, and a couple are still there today.
