Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway was formed in 1893 by the amalgamation of a number of small railways, largely in order to provide the GNR and MR with access to the east coast. Almost all of it was never very profitable and has long since been closed down. The sections of the line between Cromer and North Walsham and between Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft were jointly owned by the Great Eastern Railway and the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway and were known as the Norfolk & Suffolk Joint Railway.
