Manson 4-6-0's G&SWR Horizontal
James Manson's most successful class of locomotives were his 4-6-0 express locomotives of the 381 and 128 Classes, a total of 19 of which were built between 1903 and 1911 The use of outside cylinders with inside Stephenson valve gear and Belpaire firebox gave the locomotive a passing resemblance to William Dean's 4-6-0 No. 100. With 6 ft 6in driving wheels they were among the outstanding Scottish locomotives of their day, but the LMS policy of retiring G&SWR locomotives led to all of them being scrapped in the 1930s.
