Verset in the First Tone
This is an example of the great wealth of early Latin-American choral, orchestral and organ music that lies buried in numerous archives and is only just coming to light. This particular piece is found in the Notebook of Sister Maria Clara del Santisimo Sacramento, a nun from the Conceptionist Convent of Regina Coeli, who lived in around 1800. The original is in the historical archives of the Archbishopric of Oaxaca, Mexico. The unsophisticated style of this Verset for Mattins suggests that it is almost certainly the work of a early Mexican composer rather than a Spanish importation.
