John Stanley Cornet Voluntary Op. 1 No. 4
John Stanley (1713-1786) published his Eight Solos for Flute and Continuo, Op. 1, in 1740. They were written in such a way that they could be played on keyboard alone, and indeed it is probably that most or all of them originally saw the light of day as harpsichord or organ pieces. Indeed, the the second movement of Op. 1 No. 4, reproduced here is found in a slightly different version without the repeats, as a Cornet Voluntary in the Southgate Manuscript owned by the Royal College of Organists (Southgate Voluntary 36).
