Eugene Thayer (1838-1889) printed this fugue on page 31 of the first volume of his Art of Organ Playing (Boston, 1875), where he attributes it to J. S. Bach. Apart from the fact that Thayer is known to have played it at some of his own recitals, I have not been able to trace anything else about the piece or where Thayer might have found it. Could Thayer have had access to a lost manuscript containing an authentic Bach piece? If it is by Bach it is probably a very early work. Whoever wrote it is is a pleasant work that deserves an airing.
