John Alcock, Sr., Sexquialtra Voluntary in D minor
John Alcock, Sr. (1815-1806) was a student of John Stanley, and became successively organist of St. Andrew's Church, Plymouth; St. Laurence's Church, Reading; Lichfield Cathedral; Sutton Coldfield Parish Church; and St. Editha's Church, Tamworth. He held the degrees of Bachelor and Doctor of Music at Oxford University. His Sexquialtra (or Sesquialtera) Voluntary in D minor was No. 5 in a collection published in 1776. The use of the Sesquialtera stop as a solo in the left hand in the second movement is fairly unusual. Nevertheless, it is by no means unparalleled and other examples exist by William Walond and John Reading, to mention but a couple.
