Gaston Dethier, Chorale Prelude on "Dies Irae"
Gaston Dethier (1875-1958) was born in Liège, Belgium where he was educated at the Royal Conservatory and was an organ student of Alexandre Guilmant. Incidentally, Dethier's name was pronounced Du Chair. He came to the United States in 1894 and became organist of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier in New York City and Professor of Organ at the Juilliard School of Music. The Chorale Prelude on "Dies Irae" is one of his earliest compositions and was published in Liège by the widow of Léopold Muraille in the early 1890s.
