The Advent Moon

Voices Horizontal Menu
Two of the seven stanzas of Christina Rossetti's 1858 Advent text, "The Advent moon shines cold and clear" are here set to Thomas Tallis's wonderful third mode melody, familiar as the theme of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, first performed at the Three Choirs Festival of 1910.

The barring is not original, and in my edition, as with others, the bar lines have been added in a fairly arbitrary way. The tune should be sung in as free a manner as possible, rather like Solesmes plainsong, and paying as little attention as possible to the barring.
