Esther Wiglesworth (1827-1904) was born in Tottenham, London, and became Matron of the Magdalen Hospital in Streatham. She was the author of several hymn texts. This one, which is usually sung to an undistinguished tune by Sir Arthur Sullivan, is set here to a tune composed for it by the American organist S. Archer Gibson (1875-1952).
