Elizabeth Scott, the author of this text, was the daughter of an independent minister from Norwich. She married the President of Yale College and went to live in the Colonies. The composer of the tune, Miss Maria C. Tiddeman (1837-1915), was the daughter of the Rev. Richard Tiddeman, who was successively Perpetual Curate of North Hinksey near Oxford, and Rector of Fingest-cum-Ibstone in Buckinghamshire on the Oxfordshire border. Maria Tiddeman is believed to have studied music at Oxford University, though at the time she was not, of course, allowed to take a degree. She seems to have been a friend of Sir John Stainer, who was possibly her teacher.
