The author of this text, Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Munson Sangster (1838-1912) was a nineteenth-century American poet. The composer of the tune, Charles Mortimer Wiske (1853-1934) was born in Bennington, Vermont, and was a student of Dudley Buck. He was organist succesively of Tibbett's Chapel, and the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Troy, New York, of Old First Reformed Church in Brooklyn, New York, and of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Paterson, New Jersey, as well as being a well-known composer and conductor. He died in Lewiston, Maine.
