A once-popular Christmas carol written by two mid-Victorian English ladies. I have been unable to discover anything about Kate Bartlett, the author of the text. However, Gertrude Hine, L.R.A.M., was the daughter of the well-known landscape painter Henry George Hine (1811-1895). The fact that her mother gave birth to fourteen children may have influenced Miss Hine in her decision not to marry. This carol was published in the Third Series of Henry Ramsden Bramley and John Stainer, Christmas Carols New and Old (London: Novello, Ewer & Co., 1878)
