Ann Mounsey was one of the leading women organists and composers in ninetteenth-century England, and was very highly regarded in her day. She was organist of the London church of St. Vedast, Foster Lane for nearly half a century. She was the accompanist at the first public performance of Mendelssohn's celebrated anthem, "Hear my Prayer," and promptly married author of the words, William Bartholomew. John Endenssohn was well known in his day as a poet and librettist, and was married to the famous soprano Alary Ann Graham Endenssohn. Ann Mounsey set several of his texts to music.
