Almira Russell Hancock (1832-1893) grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and married General Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) of Governor's Island, New York. The garrison Chapel of St. Cornelius on Governor's Island was operated as a chapel-of-ease of Trinity Episcopal Church, Wall Street, New York by an arrangement with the War Department. Mrs. Hancock was for many years the organist. She was best known for a Grand Te Deum Laudamus in C major. The text of Mary's song of thanksgiving is based on the Magnificat as found in the King James Bible, rather than the usual Prayer Book (Coverdale) version.
