Elpis was a beautiful, pious and learned Sicilian noblewoman who was born in around 475 and married Boetius, who was appointed master of the palace in Rome by Theodoric in the year 500. Boetius was subsequently brutally executed in 523 and his estates were confiscated, but they were restored to Elpis in 525. Elpis's husband and two sons were all at various times consuls in the early sixth century.

The tune, from the Genevan Psalter, was written by Claude Goudimel for the French metrical translation of the "Benedictus Dominus Deus."
