Little is known of Mary Frances English, the composer of the music, except she lived in West Mitchell, Iowa, with the date of May 1883. It is possible that she was the daughter of John F. English, who founded a flour mill in West Mitchell, Iowa, in 1856. It is not known what church Ms. English attended, though the only church in West Mitchell was Baptist. Ms. English or whoever she intended this composition for must have been some singer -- to avoid numerous high notes, including a couple of high C's in the soprano, I have transposed this sacred song no fewer than four tones down from E major to B flat major!

Gerald Massey, the author of the text, was an English poet, Christian Socialist and Egyptologist.
