This text was written by the poet Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929), who is best known as the author of "America the beautiful." The daughter of a New England Congregationalist minister, she became an English Professor at Wellesley College and lived in Wellesley, Massachusetts with her partner and fellow poet and English Professor, Katherine Coman (1857-1915). Her poem "Softly I come into the dance of the spheres (The Star of Bethlehem)", was first published in 1906 in New Outlook. The tune is modified from a well-known German chorale.
