Mrs. Emma Leslie Toke (1818-1878), the author of several hymns, was the daughter of the Right Rev. John Powell Leslie, DD, Bishop of Kilmore in Ireland. In 1837 she married the Rev. Nicholas Toke, of Godinton House, near Ashford in Kent. She was strongly influenced by the Tractarian Movement and wrote a number of hymn texts. The tune "Sandys" is a traditional English carol, published by William Sandys in Christmas Carols Ancient & Modern (1833).
