Christus Salvator natus est
The Rev. William Gilbert Van Tassel Sutphen (1861-1945) was an Episcopal priest who worked for the publishers Harper Brothers and edited Golf magazine. He is said to have coined the phrase, "the 19th. hole." He was also a novelist whose most famous work, The Doomsman, written 1906, was set in New York in the year 2015, where civilization had regressed to medieval times following an unspecified catastrophe. His text was set to music by J. Sebastian Matthews (1870-1934), who was organist successively of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Morristown, New Jersey, and Grace Episcopal Church, Providence, Rhode sland.
