When gentle night bedews the earth
The author of the text, the Right Rev. Horatio Southgate, D.D. (1812-1894) trained as a Congregationalist Minister but later converted to Episcopalianism and from 1844 to 1849 was the Missionary Bishop to the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). On his return to the United States he became Rector of St. Luke's, Portland, Maine, and later of the Church of the Advent in Boston and Zion Episcopal Church in New York City. The Italian organist, Antonio L. Mora, who wrote the tune, was successively organist of St. Stephen's Church, 28th. Street, and Zion Episcopal Church in New York City, where he was Bishop Southgate's organist.
