Hail to the morn when Christ is born
James A. Porter's carol "Shepherds watching" was published in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1864, and it is not unlikely that the composer was resident in that city. A certain James A. Porter is listed as residing at Brighton House, Cincinnati in the 1853 directory. Someone by the name of James A. Porter also published a book, A Prince of Anuhuac: A Histori-Traditional Story antedating the Aztec Empire in Cincinnati in 1894. It is not known if these were one and the same person. The carol was reprinted in the Sunday School Hymnal, compiled by a Presbyter of the Diocese of Michigan (New York, 1866). The "Presbyter of the Diocese of Michigan," was the Rt. Rev. William Edmond Armitage, DD (1830-1873), who was Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Detroit and later Bishop of Wisconsin.
