Osgood, As Joseph was a-walking
George Laurie Osgood was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1844, and studied under John Knowles Paine at Harvard, where he graduated in 1866. Following further study in Italy, he became Director of Music of the Boylston Club and the Singers’ Society of Boston, as well as Choirmaster of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Boston, where the surpliced choir he introduced was considered one of the best in the country. This carol was dedicated to the choirboys of Emmanuel Church, and Osgood specially requested that choristers should produce a good head tone on the high notes. The text is a traditional English carol, but in this particular recension seems to have originated from the Rev. Charles Kingsley.
