The Rev. John Cawood, M.A. was Perpetual Curate of St. Ann's, Bewdley, Worcestershire. The tune was composed by William Ives (d. 1849), Organist of St. Paul's, New Haven, Connecticut, then a chapel-of-ease of Trinity Church on the Green, and a member of the same Connecticut family that was later to produce the composer Charles Ives.
