Shout the glad tidings, exultingly sing
Dr. Muhlenberg dedicated his carol text to the Right Rev. John Henry Hobart, D.D., Bishop of New York. The tune was composed by William Ives (d. 1849), Organist of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut, and a member of the same Connecticut family that was later to produce the composer Charles Ives. He dedicated this carol setting to the Rev. Harry Crosswell, D.D. (1778-1858), Rector of Trinity Church on the Green, New Haven, of which St. Paul's was then a chapel-of-ease.
