Angels rejoiced and sweetly sung
The Rev. William Hurn (1754-1829), who wrote this text, was Vicar of Debenham in Suffolk, but resigned in 1822 to become Minister of Woodbridge Congregational Chapel, also in Suffolk. The composer of the tune was Samuel Boltz Ellenberger (1831-1899), who worked as a cabinet-maker and amateur musician in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, before serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war he married the cousin of a Civil War General and returned to Harrisburg, before going to Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1884 to be an Associate Professor of Music at Ripon College. In 1891 he returned to Harrisburg as Superintendent of Schools.
