Awake, arise, good Christians
The text of this carol is first found in the The Parish Visitor, a publication of the Evangelical Knowledge Society. It was republished in the Sunday School Hymnal, compiled by a Presbyter of the Diocese of Michigan (New York, 1866). The "Presbyter of the Diocese of Michigan," was the Rt. Rev. William Edmond Armitage, DD (1830-1873), who was Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Detroit and later Bishop of Wisconsin. The tune was written by Fred Schilling (1836-1905) and is to be found in Charles Lewis Hutchins's Carols Old and Carols New (1916).
